Summer Cup Round 3 Results

Tuesday 9th April

Third round of the Summer Cup

Dave Ireland is now the only player with 3/3 after 3 rounds of the Summer Cup. Dave beat the only other player on 2 points,Warrick Scaiffe. There were wins for Kaan,Dave Filer, Roy Watson, Mike Johnson, Dave Riley, Siti Anwar, John Conway, Nicola Carrouche,Paul Sweatman, Nigle Morris, our resident Arbiter - Hok, David Adams, and Trevor Gazee.

There were some very tight games:-
Kaan won a very close game with James Harrison which went right down to a few seconds on each players clock. The game could have gone either way and as is easily done when there are only a few seconds left mistakes occur and Kaan was fortunate enough to benefit from a mistake by James.

Sam Cotterill and Bava agreed a draw again with only a few seconds left on Bava'a clock. Stan Whitmore continued his steady progress clocking up another draw.

As a side note we were also treated to a visit by Chris Baker, who was in the area on a personal matter. He was there purely in an observational capacity, some of the older members may remember Chris from a good few years ago when he played schools chess. Chris is originally from Coventry, attended King Henry V111 school, and since leaving the area has gone on to become an IM.

Summer Cup Round 2 Results

Tuesday 2nd April

The Second Round of the Summer Cup has produced one of the oddest situations I have seen in chess!

After 2 Rounds and over 35 players entered into the competition only TWO players have 2 points !

Quite remarkable at such an early stage of a Swiss competition - You would have expected the top 10 or so seeds to have all gained 2 points by this stage of the competition - and of the two players one was not even seeded - making it all the more unusual !

Summary
Dave Ireland is the only seeded player to have 2 points.
Warrick Scaife (unseeded and no grade) had a great win against Bernard Charnley. Mike Johnson held Sam Cotterill to a draw and arguably had the edge in a close end game.

Margarita again showed how much she has greatly improved and drew with Bava - a fantastic result.

There were also wins for Wesley Beeston, Arun Paul, Aloise Evans, Roy Watson, John Loughnane, Sit Anwar and John Conway.

The above results show how close this competition is going to be with all the higher graded players already dropping points at such an early stage.

Match Result

Report from Ed Goodwin on Coventry Chess Club A first win since 2017

This was our first win in league 1 since January 17th 2017

Henrik had a strong looking attack but over pressed trying to win against Mark Page and lost in a time scramble . A rare loss in what has been an excellent season.

Dave Ireland had to fight  to get a draw against Mike Donnelly who as always knew the opening very well. Dave would have liked to agree a draw earlier than he did but at that point the result of the match was unclear.

Bernard won against habitual opponent Ben Graff. Early on the game I didn’t think it looked that good for Bernard ( I may be wrong here). Then when I looked later he had won a rook.

My game against David Shurrock was a 22  move win with the London System after he allowed a Greek gift Bxh7 sacrifice. It was my first win in Division 1 for a season and a half.
