New Season - Important Club Information

Hope everyone had a really good Summer Holiday!

I am pleased to say the New Season is almost upon us and next week Tuesday 27th August I will start collecting membership fees for the New Season.

Could all members please try and attend - even if just to pay the membership fees - as we have to pay the ECF their membership fees very soon and any members not registered are unable to play in the league.

This year the membership fee is £32.00 for Adults and £25.00 for U18's. This membership fee includes your Bronze membership to the ECF. Hire of the room. Fees to Coventry League and finally, the general running of Coventry Chess Club!

If any players hold a silver, gold or platinum membership please let me know as I will need to deduct this from your membership.

I also have the Fixture Cards for the start of the first Matches. The First match is a Divisional Cup Match on 24th September 2013. With League Matches starting Tuesday October 1st.

Captains, please note that the new online means of entering results is being used this season, however Oliver Cosham still requires you to either send in a card OR for the first time in history Oliver will accept the results by email:

His email address is: olivercosham@me.com

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday! - Simon

ECF Grades

The new (2013) ECF grades have just been published. Just go to the ECF grading database at this link and find out your new grade. http://www.englishchess.org.uk/grading/database/

Also, whilst I was browsing the ECF website I noticed that one of the benefits of being a member of the ECF is that all Bronze,Silver and Gold members have access to the online newsletter "Chess Moves" which is published every two months by the ECF

I am not sure how many members are aware of this, but it is well worth signing up as I have just recently signed up and it is very informative. Lots of news, details of tournaments, and games to go through. You also get access to all the back issues as well!

In fact this months issue has a good article on Nigel Short and how he fared at his latest tournament.Along with some of his games

To sign up go here http://www.englishchess.org.uk/chess-moves-2/ and get your password for access.

 To All Members:

Please find below details of the upcoming Chess Academy. For further details please contact the organiser Paul Lam.

Just as a side note:- I have had a few members ask me about private tuition and on the website there are details for private tuition run by Paul Lam. He is also very reasonable with his charges.

Dear Coventry and Warwickshire chess friends,

I hope you all are well. I thought I would share the latest news on the CCA with you. We now have a blog/website and a Facebook page which you are welcome to check out. These still need some work doing on them, but it's a start.  They can be found at:

It would be very helpful if you could circulate these links to anyone who might be interested. I believe a few of you run chess blogs/websites. If you could add the above links to these, it would also be appreciated.

Preparation for the launch on Saturday 20 July is going well and I continue to receive expressions of interest from parents and prospective volunteers. I have secured additional funding for the CCA from the John Robinson Youth Chess Trust; this is a great boost for us, but any extra would do no harm, so please get in touch if you have any other funding ideas or tips.

Many thanks for all the help and support you have provided so far.

Kind regards,

Paul

Coventry Chess Academy

As mentioned at the AGM by Mike Johnson please find a note from Paul Lam about the Coventry Chess Academy:

Hello Mike,

I have some good news regarding the Coventry Chess Academy (CCA) which we discussed at the Coventry League AGM. I have now secured a venue for the academy. It will be at Cheylesmore Community Centre (The following link contains further details http://www.cheylesmorecentre.co.uk/news.php). The provisional launch date is 13/07/2013.

I'm looking for volunteers who are interested in coaching at the academy. Previous experience of teaching chess and working with children would be preferred, but it is not essential. Obtaining DBS clearance is required. I can assist with the process of applying for this by registering the CCA with an umbrella body. I will then arrange face-to-face meetings with applicants, check relevant documents etc, and submit applications online on their behalf which the umbrella body will process. This will cost less than usual and the turnaround time would be quicker. Or so I'm led to believe from my phone conversation with the umbrella body. I'm still awaiting a comprehensive email explaining the procedure from them.

Would it be possible for you to pass this message onto the Coventry League club secretaries, so that they in turn can forward it to their members? It would be much appreciated. If anyone has any questions, they are welcome to send me an email or to call me on 07769892520.

Many thanks,

Paul Lam

Summer Cup

Many thanks to Simon for running a great tournament, as always ! Congrats to Josh for winning, and good to see some newcomers this year. In particular, it will be interesting to see how my last round opponent, Sean Doherty, fares in the new season. Sean played remarkably for someone that has little OTB competitive chess experience, and has just started taking online lessons from a GM, so he's obviously serious about improving.

Round 6 of Summer Cup

The final round of the Summer Cup was played yesterday evening and congratulations must go to Joshua Pink who has scored 6/6 and has therefore won the 2013 John Evans Memorial Trophy Summer Cup.

Congratulations must also go to Dave Ireland who was this year's Runner Up with a score of 5/6.

Ed Goodwin scored 4/6 only loosing once in the tournament

In matches last night Joshua only needed a draw to win the Cup and he actually won his match against Bava.

Paul Sweatman achieved a very creditable draw against Clive Blackburn. Don Sheward also played very well to secure a draw against Pete Smith. As mentioned previously our two newcomers also performed very well - Gerald Reason drawing with Howard Jones and although Sean Doherty lost against Dave Ireland he played very well.

Tournament Round Up

Bob Holmes narrowly missed out on a trophy this year with 4.5 points and yet again had an excellent Cup run and always does consistently well in this tournament.

Bava had a very good tournament securing 4/6 and had a chance of winning the Cup right upto the last round. The two games he lost were to Dave and Joshua

Stan Whitmore, Clive Blackburn, Pete Smith  also had an excellent Cup Run - only loosing twice in the tournament.

Well Done to Paul Sweatman who also achieved 3.5 points only loosing twice as well, with one being to Dave Ireland

John McCann and John Harris also obtained 3 points another solid performance.

A special mention for Sean Doherty who got 3.5 points for the tournament and was challenging the leaders at the end of the Cup... a great result for someone who is just learning the game!

Gerald Reason who has recently returned to chess after a long period also scored a creditable 2.5 points - having missed the first round.

Daniel Rowlands also only lost twice scoring 2.5 points

A big Thank you to all  the players who took part in the Cup and playing in the spirit of the game this made it a very enjoyable tournament to run and organise.

Presentation of the trophy's will take place at the AGM next week - 11th June 2013 7.30pm - 8pm

Summer Cup Round 4 Results

The Fourth round of the Summer Cup was held on Tuesday 21st May

The Match with the only two players on three points was between Dave Ireland and Joshua Pink (who has just joined us this season) J.Pink was playing with the white pieces and he eventually managed to gain a pawn in the end game and won a very close fought match. This is the first time time Dave Ireland has lost a game in the Summer cup for a long time. Could we soon have a new name on the cup ?

R. Holmes continued his run of excellent results and is now in second place on 3.5 points

Sean Doherty also continued his run of excellent results winning his match against John Faill. This is Sean's first tournament and has only just joined Coventry Chess Club.

Daniel Rowlands drew with P.Smith another player who is very quickly improving. Daniel hopes to get into Warwick University - but of course he will not dare switch to playing for University or so he tells me!

Fifth Round is next Tuesday 28th May.

Summer Cup Round 2 Results - Coventry Chess

Round 2 of Coventry Chess Summer cup was played on the 7th and there were some excellent games.

Daniel Rowlands managed to take Dave Ireland down to a pawn ending. When most players would have settled for a draw, as expected Dave managed to find the win, a lesson in how to win pawn endings.

Rajan Parekh, fresh from his draw against a grade 175 at the 4 NCL, managed a closely fought draw with Wesley Beeston.

The Summer Cup yet again threw up a surprise result with Ravi Sian winning against Dave Filer.

Congratulations must go to Sean Doherty on winning his match. Sean has only just started playing OTB chess, so a very good result for him.
