A Joint Coventry and Leamington Online Chess League in the new year, 2021!

PRESS RELEASE

Coventry, Leamington, and surrounding area / 01 December 2020

Building on a successful Autumn 2020 season of online chess (despite the pandemic!), the Coventry and District Chess League will be forming a joint 2021 Spring League with the Leamington and District Chess League.

Local chess across the Coventry and Leamington area, remains vibrant as ever. The new joint league plans to bring together all the existing clubs in both Leagues. This comes in the backdrop of Warwickshire and surrounding areas entering Tier 3 restrictions, the Coventry's City of Culture 2021 celebrations, and of course, the renewed interest in chess from the Netflix's Queen Gambit TV show - watched by over 70 million people since its release!

The current online League runs across two divisions, an Open Division, and an U140 Division, with eighteen teams stretching over the borders of Warwickshire. The joint League is due to begin in the new year, on the week beginning 18th January 2021, and will have two to three divisions. The League is open to all existing Coventry and Leamington League clubs, and any new clubs based in historic Warwickshire. The deadline for entries, is nominally 23.59 Wednesday 6th January.

Summer Cup - Round 5 Results

Round 5 produced some very interesting games, particularly Ed Goodwin v D.Filer. The game was fairly level most of the time and it would have been easy for both players to agree a draw, however both players felt they need to win the game to keep in the running for a top spot. So, this produced a very exciting end game with both players having little time left on their respective clocks. Dave Filer, eventually ran out the winner with 42 seconds left on his clock.

There was also a very good win for John Loughnane against Wesley Beeston, John said this was the first time he had ever beaten Wes in friendlies or match play.

Dave Ireland beat W.Martin to now lead the tournament on 4.5 points and Dave does look set to win the tournament or will there be a last minute surprise!

Paul Sweatman continued his excellent run in the Tournament, securing a hard fought draw against Stan Whitmore, last years winner of the Gordon Cornell trophy.

In the battle of the Juniors Margarita won her game against Jude Shearsby

As we go into the last round there is all to play for with Dave Ireland in pole position and plenty of players also vying for the Runners Up spot.

The Gordon Cornell trophy looks to be between last years winner Stan Whitmore on 3 points, Paul Sweatman on 3 points, Margarita on 3 points, and Wesley Beeston 2.5 points.

Final Round is next week, normal start time 7.30pm

Reminder for Club members - AGM is 22nd May. Same format as last year with a light buffet at the end of the meeting.

We held the second round of the Summer Cup yesterday evening (10/42018)

Another good turnout with 26 players in total.

We had our first draw of the tournament between Nigel Morris and Roy Watson. Wilfrid a new player who has recently joined ourselves completed another win over John Loughane.

Summer Cup - Round 5 Results

Round up of matches for the 5th Round :-

Andy Ward won against Dave Ireland in a very tight end game - Andy is becoming a bit of an end game specialist - winning many of his games through the end game - maybe time for us all to try and learn a bit more about the end game?

Dave Filer eventually lost to Dragomir after a long hard battle - Dragomir is now on 4 points and in second place for the competition.

Bava won against Ed Goodwin - a good win for Bava. Clive Blackburn ended Paul Sweatman's good run in the competition.

So next week will be the decider between Andy Ward and Dragomir - nice to see two relatively new club members do well in the competition.

Howard Jones is well positioned to win the Gordon Cornell U120 trophy being on 3 points and not yet having lost a game. He is closely followed by Clive Blackburn, David Adams all on 3 points all Pete Smith and Paul Sweatman on 2.5 all who have a chance of winning - should be exciting next week!

The final round will be held next week 10th May. 7.30pm

Summer Cup - Round 4 Results

Round 4 of the Summer Cup was held last night. Here are some of the highlights!

Dave Ireland and Andy Ward both won their matches, meaning that they are both now on 3.5 points. So, this means next week week they will play each other to see who can potentially become the outright leader.

The Gordon Gornell U120 is closely contested with Howard Jones and Paul Sweatman both on 2.5 points.

Howard Jones played well to get a draw against Ed Goodwin and Dragomir continued his good run winning against Stan Whitmore.

Paul Sweatman again continued his impressive run in the Tournament with a good win over Alan Franklin to now give Paul a total of 2.5 points for the Tournament.

Summer Cup - Round 2 Results

The secound round of the Summer Cup matches, took place last night and all top three boards drew their matches. This now means after only two rounds there is only one player with 2 points - Dave Filer - I can not ever remember this happening in the Cup at such an early stage.

Dragomir did exceptionally well in drawing with Dave Ireland - the final position was a dead draw.

Howard Jones also did very well against  new club member Andy Ward, again gaining a draw after being a pawn down for a large part of the game.

As I mentioned earlier Dave Filer now has two points after completing a win against Pete Smith and is top of the table. Gordon Cornell also won last night - does this mean he may be the first winner of the Gordon Cornell U120 Trophy!

Paul Sweatman had an impressive win over John Conway, who is graded 126. An excellent result for Paul.

There was also the KO Cup final held between Kenilworth and Chelmsley Wood. Chelmsley Wood did win the final as Mark Page surprisingly lost on Board 1 and Mike Donnelly drew on Board 2. So with the handicap Chelmsley Wood are the winners.

However, two things arose which are worth noting, a Chelmsley Wood players mobile went off (three times) so his opponent could have claimed the game - three times!

Secondly, a basic rule of chess, but again this situation arose on Board 1 in the Cup match and a game in the Summer Cup.
The player was using one hand to move the piece and the other hand to operate the clock. Clearly this is not allowed and in a time scramble it can be critical.

Round 3 next week:-  Tuesday 19th April. 7.30pm

Here are all the results from last night:

12/4/16 Round 2
