Summer Cup - Round 6 Results

The final round of the Summer Cup was completed yesterday evening and Congratulations must go to Andy Ward who has won the Summer Cup with an impressive 5.5/6

The Runner up is Dave Ireland on 4.5/6. The Winner of the inaugral Gordon Cornell U120 trophy is Howard Jones with 4/6.

A special mention must go to Dragomir who on his first Summer Cup tournament was challenging for the top spot right from the start and only falling at the last hurdle to Andy Ward the eventual winner. Dragomir tied in third place on 3.5 points with Ed Goodwin and Bava.

Ed Goodwin again had a good tournament finishing in the top 3 spot. Bava also had an excellent tournament and could easily have secured the runners up position if he had won against Dave Ireland. But Dave won and Bava just missed out again on finishing in the top two positions.

The Gordon Cornell trophy has given added incentive to players graded U120 and seems to have been very successful, with a number of players potentially able to win the trophy on the last round.

However, Howard Jones was the eventual winner, with 4 points out of 6 and was undefeated through the tournament with a solid 4 draws and two wins. Paul Sweatman continued his steady improvement and finished with a draw against Pete Smith. Gordon Cornell finished on three points and nearly won the Gordon Cornell trophy !

A number of players finished on the target that a lot of players have ... 3 points - Pete Smith, Stan Whitmore, Dave Filer, Bob Holmes, Paul Sweatman, David Adams and Gordon Cornell - a good steady tournament performance. David Adams also finished strongly in his first Summer Cup tournament on 3 points - very encouraging for the new season.

The trophies for the winners will be presented at the AGM - date to be announced.

I would like to say Thank you to all the players who took part and made it an enjoyable inter club tournament and hope everyone who played, enjoyed the Tournament and found it a good way to finish playing competitve chess until the start of next season.

Hope everyone has a good summer break and if we do not see you at the AGM we will see you at the start of the new season - which is only 16 weeks away !

The results from last night are below with the final positions:-

Summer Cup - Round 5 Results

Round up of matches for the 5th Round :-

Andy Ward won against Dave Ireland in a very tight end game - Andy is becoming a bit of an end game specialist - winning many of his games through the end game - maybe time for us all to try and learn a bit more about the end game?

Dave Filer eventually lost to Dragomir after a long hard battle - Dragomir is now on 4 points and in second place for the competition.

Bava won against Ed Goodwin - a good win for Bava. Clive Blackburn ended Paul Sweatman's good run in the competition.

So next week will be the decider between Andy Ward and Dragomir - nice to see two relatively new club members do well in the competition.

Howard Jones is well positioned to win the Gordon Cornell U120 trophy being on 3 points and not yet having lost a game. He is closely followed by Clive Blackburn, David Adams all on 3 points all Pete Smith and Paul Sweatman on 2.5 all who have a chance of winning - should be exciting next week!

The final round will be held next week 10th May. 7.30pm

Summer Cup - Round 4 Results

Round 4 of the Summer Cup was held last night. Here are some of the highlights!

Dave Ireland and Andy Ward both won their matches, meaning that they are both now on 3.5 points. So, this means next week week they will play each other to see who can potentially become the outright leader.

The Gordon Gornell U120 is closely contested with Howard Jones and Paul Sweatman both on 2.5 points.

Howard Jones played well to get a draw against Ed Goodwin and Dragomir continued his good run winning against Stan Whitmore.

Paul Sweatman again continued his impressive run in the Tournament with a good win over Alan Franklin to now give Paul a total of 2.5 points for the Tournament.

Bob Holmes beat Wesley Beeston, however Bob did admit afterwards he was one move away from resigning if Wesley had moved his bishop to attack Bob's queen.

David Adams  completed another good win to give him two points for the competition.

Round 5 next week 3rd May. Start time 7.30pm.

Paul Sweatman again played well after his win last week and got a hard fought draw against Howard Jones -  a contender for the Gordon Cornell Cup?

Dragomir, drew with Ed Goodwin, the second First Division player he has held to a draw.

Summer Cup - Round 2 Results

The secound round of the Summer Cup matches, took place last night and all top three boards drew their matches. This now means after only two rounds there is only one player with 2 points - Dave Filer - I can not ever remember this happening in the Cup at such an early stage.

Dragomir did exceptionally well in drawing with Dave Ireland - the final position was a dead draw.

Howard Jones also did very well against  new club member Andy Ward, again gaining a draw after being a pawn down for a large part of the game.

As I mentioned earlier Dave Filer now has two points after completing a win against Pete Smith and is top of the table. Gordon Cornell also won last night - does this mean he may be the first winner of the Gordon Cornell U120 Trophy!

Paul Sweatman had an impressive win over John Conway, who is graded 126. An excellent result for Paul.

There was also the KO Cup final held between Kenilworth and Chelmsley Wood. Chelmsley Wood did win the final as Mark Page surprisingly lost on Board 1 and Mike Donnelly drew on Board 2. So with the handicap Chelmsley Wood are the winners.

However, two things arose which are worth noting, a Chelmsley Wood players mobile went off (three times) so his opponent could have claimed the game - three times!

Secondly, a basic rule of chess, but again this situation arose on Board 1 in the Cup match and a game in the Summer Cup.
The player was using one hand to move the piece and the other hand to operate the clock. Clearly this is not allowed and in a time scramble it can be critical.

Round 3 next week:-  Tuesday 19th April. 7.30pm

Here are all the results from last night:

The first matches in the Summer Cup were played yesterday evening (5/4/16) and despite this being the first round with the seeds expected to win early the first match did not finish until well past 9.30pm. So none of the seeds had an easy ride, even in the first round. However the only unseeded player to eventually win was Stan Whitmore with an excellent win over John Conway. Bob Holmes also drew with Simon Weaver.

Next Round is next week Tuesday 12th April. 7.30pm start.

Second Division Winners Warwickshire Open Summer Cup

I am pleased to say that the C Team, having secured a win against Newdigate on the 1st March, are Second Division Champions. So congratulations to Bava, Howard Jones, Ian Evans.

The D team also finished a very creditable fourth place and only 2/3 points off a Runners up position.

The E team whilst they finished bottom had a really good season - it may seem strange to say that but it was their first season in the Second Division and they achieved FIVE draws and one win so only just missed out on getting more points for safety.

Just a reminder that the Warwickshire Open takes place this weekend - 5th and 6th March at Coventry Rugby Club Butts Park Arena. I know a number of Coventry members are taking part, so good luck to all of them. It is not to late to enter so if you wish to play at the weekend. Here is the link for more details: -

Warwickshire Open

I will also confirm the date when the Summer Cup will start in a few weeks. (It very much depends on the results of the Knock Out Cup)

AGM

The AGM was held yesterday evening and there was an excellent turnout with over 18 members.

Topics Discussed included the following :-

Apologies, Ed Goodwin & Mike Johnson

All officers were re-elected unopposed as follows :-

Dave Filer - Chairman
Mike Johnson - Secretary
Simon Weaver - Treasurer

Chairmans report - Dave gave a summary of how teams had fared over last season. The highlight being the D team winning Division 2 and the KO Cup. Dave Thanked all the Captains for their help over the season.

Treasurer's report - Simon presented the accounts and went through all income and expenditure items. The club's finances are still healthy and will enable us to continue to purchase new equipment when needed. Also it was hoped to keep the annual subscriptions the same for the next season.

Other matters raised:

Tom was concerned about not being picked next season for a game due to having a poor run of results. However he was assured by the committee that we will continue with the policy of giving everyone a game of league chess if they want. Even if this means we form another team to accommodate everyone.

Simon proposed that we continue to roll out the upgrading of our clocks by purchasing 4 more digital clocks for the C team. Another discussion followed about the pro's and cons of digital clocks versus analogue clocks. A vote was eventually taken and 15 voted for new digital clocks with 2 against.

Ben Graff requested that full address's plus postcodes to be put on fixture cards and club websites to make it easier to find away venues.

A team formation meeting is to be held mid September to finalise the teams for the new season.

Captains. John Harris has agreed to be a Captain next year. Joshua Pink is standing down.

Venue - Dave reminded all members that no food or drink can be brought into Massey Ferguson. The same applies to Away venues as well especially Nuneaton.

Mark Page also requested that we look at updating the boards as some of the older ones are in a poor state.

A request was made that we have a club night. However this would increase the annual subs if we had to pay for the hire of the room for another evening.

Simon thought that the new League Website and inputting of games had worked really well and gave players far more up to date information on teams positions in the League.

Summer Cup Results and Final Table

Well, The Summer Cup came to a conclusion last night. It was all very tense throughout the night as there were 5 or 6 players who could have secured first or second place.

The final result was Dave Ireland getting a draw with Ed Goodwin which ensured he was the winner with 5 points. Rajen drew with Bob Holmes giving him 4.5 points along with Ben Graff.

On countback of their opponents points Rajan is the Runner Up with Ben in Third place. This was Ben's first Summer Cup so a great result for him narrowly missing out on a trophy.
Congratulations to Dave and Rajan.

Round Up
Ed Goodwin went through the whole tournament unbeaten having played most of the top players. Bob Holmes also went through the whole tournament unbeaten securing 5 draws along the way. Some one who will remain nameless, has suggested he changes his name to Bob "The draw" Holmes! Dave Filer also had an excellent tournament only loosing to Dave Ireland and ending up on 4 points. Pete Smith turned in a solid performance on 3 points.

Clive Blackburn, Stan Whitmore and Ian Evans all had a good tournament and were challenging the leaders thoroughout. They all ended up on 3.5 points.

Sachin Vats a new player to the Club earned 3 points consisting of 2 wins and 2 draws. He clearly will be an asset next season in the League.
Simon Curry another new player also got 2 points having only played in the final three rounds. So will be one to watch as well.

Paul Sweatman ended up with 2.5 points, a good result as he lost his first two games, but came back strongly in the latter stages of the tournament. John Harris also got 2.5 points but with one or two of his games he could have won having got into good positions.

I would just like to Thank all players who took part this year and have helped make it a really good competitive end of Season Tournament along with some very close games.
I intend to do the presentation of the Cups at the AGM on the 24th June.

The club will be open as normal during the summer for friendlies, so feel free to call in for a quick game over the summer. All members and non members are welcome.
